Why Research Laboratories Select Epitalon

Epitalon is one of the most studied synthetic tetrapeptides in current telomere biology and cellular aging research. As a small chemically defined four amino acid peptide, it serves as a useful tool compound for laboratories investigating telomerase enzyme activity assays, hTERT transcriptional regulation, chromatin state markers, and telomere dynamics in controlled cell culture experimental systems. Its small size makes it amenable to standard analytical frameworks including sequence verification, purity assessment, and compatibility with diverse assay environments.

  • Synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) — small, chemically defined, amenable to standard analytical frameworks
  • Studied for hTERT upregulation in human fibroblast cell culture models — published in peer-reviewed literature
  • Research tool for telomerase enzyme activity assays, TRAP assays, and telomere length measurement studies
  • Studied in bovine cumulus cell and cumulus-oocyte complex models for telomerase activity — published in PMC
  • Examined for DNA binding interactions with specific ATTTG sequence motifs in structural biology research
  • Referenced in over 100 publications primarily from the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology
  • Lyophilized format ensures stability and reproducibility across experimental runs
  • Batch and lot identifiers on all labeling for full laboratory documentation compliance

Research Background

Epitalon was developed by Vladimir Khavinson’s group at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology as the synthetic equivalent of the active component of bovine pineal gland extract epithalamin. Khavinson et al. published in-vitro findings on hTERT upregulation in human somatic fibroblast cell cultures. Anisimov et al. (2002) published preclinical findings in Cancer Letters examining Epitalon in chemically induced carcinogenesis rodent models. Subsequent publications have examined telomerase activity in bovine cumulus cells and DNA binding interactions. An overview review was published in PMC in 2025 (PMC11943447). Frequently Asked Questions

What is Epitalon?
Epitalon (Epithalon, CAS 307297-39-8) is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, originally identified as the putative active component of bovine pineal gland extract epithalamin. It is studied as a research tool for telomerase enzyme activity assays, hTERT transcriptional regulation, and telomere biology in controlled cell culture systems. Supplied strictly for scientific, analytical, and in-vitro laboratory research use only.

What is telomerase and why is it studied in laboratory research?
Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein enzyme responsible for maintaining telomere length at chromosome ends. Its catalytic component hTERT adds TTAGGG repeat sequences to telomere ends, counteracting shortening that occurs with each cell division. Telomerase activity is studied extensively in cellular biology, cancer biology, and cell culture system research. Epitalon is used as a tool compound for investigating telomerase enzyme activity and hTERT regulation in controlled in-vitro systems.

What is the FDA regulatory status of Epitalon?
The FDA classified Epitalon as a Category 2 bulk drug substance under Section 503A guidance in September 2023, confirmed in September 2024. This classification restricts licensed compounding pharmacies from preparing it for human use. It is not approved for any human therapeutic, diagnostic, or clinical application. This product is supplied for laboratory research use only.

Is Epitalon on the WADA prohibited list?
Yes. Epitalon is listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list. This product is for laboratory research use only and must not be used in competitive athletics or for any human administration purposes.

What purity is your Epitalon?
Every batch is independently verified to ≥99% HPLC purity. A Certificate of Analysis is available for each lot.

How fast does Nextday Peptides ship?
